The Makay is a massive ruiniform dating from the Jurassic era, which is located in the Center-West of Madagascar, with an area of 150 x 50KM2.

It is separated from the Isalo by the Mangoky River, and is in the region of Beroroho (South-East) and to the North-West by the region of Mandabe.

PROGRAM

D1 : ANTANANARIVO

Arrival at Ivato Airport. Welcoming at the airport with our representative and transfer to your hotel situated in the center of Antananarivo. Antananarivo is the capital city of Madagascar and the largest city on this big island in the Indian Ocean. Antananarivo means “the city of a thousand”, a reference to the 1000 soldiers that supposedly protected the newly founded city during the reign of the revered King Andrianjaka in 1610. Antananarivo is called shortly by local inhabitant Tana nowadays. And it will surprise you with its rice paddies, Asian looks, numerous stairs up steep hills, palaces, cobbled streets and churches. Antananarivo has a population of about 1.5 million people

D2 : ANTANANARIVO – AMBOSITRA

After a good night and copious breakfast, Breakfast. Drive till Antsirabe, the thermal city on the national road N°7.

Along the way, you will travel across the typical landscape of the highland, rocky hill, savanna, terraced rice field, and large orchard. First stop in Ambatolampy to visit workshop of the pot foundry.  We pass at Antsirabe, short city tour before continuing till Ambositra

D3 : AMBOSITRA - AMBALAVAO

Breakfast at the hotel, Ambositra is reputed of the marquetry and wood carving, short visit of the workshop.

After visit, continuation to the South till the city of Betsileo ethnic. We pass at Fianarantsoa. Fianarantsoa means “Good education” in Malagasy. It is a cultural and intellectual center for the whole island.

It is home to some of the oldest Protestant and Lutheran cathedrals on the island. We continue to the village of Ambalavao.

Continuation till the village of Ambalavao where we visit the workshop of the mythic Anteimoro paper and Malagasy handmade embroideries.

D4 : AMBALAVAO - RANOHIRA

After breakfast, Visit of Anja Park to spot the Lemur Catta. After the visit, departure for the village of Ranohira which hosts the famous Isalo rock dated from the Jurassic era. Arrival in Ranohira, installation at the hotel.

D5 : RANOHIRA - BEROROHO - BERONONO

Departure from Ranohira very early in the morning for the North by housing the Isalo massif, to the river Mangoky 165km of undeveloped trail, about 6 hours by road, passing by the savannah dotted with small baobab.

Crossing the Mangoky River in a motorized ferry to reach Beroroho, capital of the last civilization area before attacking the wild world;

Last lunch, then continuation to the North with 65km of track to reach the village of Beronono, where we meet the team of porters and installation in bivouac along the river  of Makay.

D6 : BERONONO - GROTTE MORAFENO

Start of trek in the Makay in total immersion during 4 days in the massif; very little known and very little surveyed, true sanctuary for a fauna and flora that have not yet delivered all their secrets.

Departure to the cave of Mahatiny to discover rock paintings and continuation towards the top of this eroded massif constituted of the yellowish and red ruiniform sandstones and covered in large part with dry vegetation.  Night in a tent on the banks of the Makay River

D7 : MORAFENO - AMBINANITELO - NOSILAHY

Departure after breakfast, to discover the narrow canyon of Ambinanitelo, and then continuation towards the summit to discover the crest and the plateau of this massif, sight on the lakes of Nosilahy

D8 : NOSILAHY - SARIAKA

Canyons Day
We pass through the canyon of Nosilahy where a crystal-clear water flows, then run along streams encircled at the bottom of canyons which can extend several hundred meters high, which shelter a wet vegetation. Water is omnipresent in this canyons, view on the forest of Behetaheta and continuation towards the second canyon of Sakamanitra and night under tent.

D9 : SARIAKA/BERONONO

Visit Sariaka lake and trek to the summit for an impressive view of two lakes Sariaka and Nosilahy and return to the village of Beronono Night under tent.

D10 : BERONONO - BEROROHO - RANOHIRA

We leave behind us the small village of Beroroha as well as the adventure of Makay. We leave the village for the direction of Ranohira.

D11 : RANOHIRA - FIANARANTSOA

After a night of rest, we return to the Highlands. Arrival in Fianarantsoa a small tour of the upper city is necessary before settling in the hotel

D12 : FIANARANTSOA - ANTSIRABE

Breakfast, then drive to Antsirabe. We will go back to Ambositra and we can make purchases for souvenirs. We continue to Antsirabe. City tour and workshops of horn makers and miniature cars.

D13 : ANTSIRABE - ANTANANARIVO

Before going back to Antananarivo, we will take a city tour in a rickshaw.
Arrival in Antananarivo, we settle down at the hotel and to finish in beauty this great discovery we will make a cocktail of sunset.

D14 : ANTANANARIVO

With our historian guide, we visit the high town of Antananarivo which contains the history of the kingdom MERINA.
Afternoon visit the artisanal market of the Digue, in the late afternoon we head for the airport. Before taking the plane we will make a day-use to change and refresh. Early evening transfer to the airport, international flight.
